Some of you may have experienced exercise headaches before while training. But what is an exercise headache and what causes them?
There’s no need to worry, exercise headaches are actually pretty common. Exercise headaches are usually a result of high intensity exercise, and they are different to regular headaches as they usually throb and pound. Other causes of exercise headaches can be dehydration and your body temperature.
There are two different types of exercise headaches, primary and secondary. A primary headache has a shorter duration and can last anywhere from 5 minutes to 48 hours. Secondary headaches on the other hand, last longer than 48 hours and are more severe.
Secondary headaches that last longer than 48 hours are important to review, as they have the potential to be harmful. Symptoms such as blurred vision, neck stiffness and vomiting all warrant a trip to the doctors. On the other hand, primary headaches are usually self-resolving.
If you are looking to prevent exercise headaches, there are a few precautionary steps to take. Ease yourself into your session making sure you slowly build up intensity. And lastly, the most important, is too stay hydrated and fuel your body with a balanced diet.
